What JOLT changes
A clean, lit office with a plan table (READY), Starlink for plans, email and video calls, and your logo on the door.
We help you plan the placement. Here is what Chicago asks for. Start by drawing the parcel line and the actual gate. In the Loop, a pad and a curb stop are different spaces. Mark where people will enter the office. Mark where a storage unit's doors will open. Identify the phase when scaffolding or excavation changes either route. We can compare the workroom size with your approved staging area. Take one current drawing to each Chicago reviewer. Keep their answers with the work permit for that address.
On a private lot
Chicago's construction-trailer permit instructions describe a single-level trailer for temporary office or storage use. That use accompanies permitted construction, rehabilitation or demolition. The original building-work permit precedes the trailer application. Ask the Department of Buildings how it classifies your container office. Give Buildings the occupancy, power plan and work-permit information. The city's temporary-structure terms call for a separate Buildings permit. They cover a construction trailer or similar temporary enclosed structure during construction. Bring the actual Chicago office description rather than a generic trailer label.
Chicago's trailer instructions refer to zoning section 17-9-0301. They also cite Building Code section 14B-31-3103. Ask the city's planning and building desks how those provisions affect this parcel. Show setbacks, required parking and fire access around the proposed office. Mark the work area's expected end date. A Loop rehabilitation and a residential driveway present different land uses. Discuss the exact location instead of only the project's street address. The Illinois building-code overview dates the statewide framework to 2025. It directs code questions to local government. For a Chicago job, bring the occupied-office question to Chicago's own desks.
An airport contractor can have a designated compound inside a much larger site. Ask the owner which part of that compound is assigned to your package. On a neighborhood storefront lot, map the loading area separately from workspace. A 40 ft office may occupy space needed by another trade. The 20 ft Base office needs a shorter approved position. Its shore-power inlet also needs a connection plan. Where power has not reached that position, consider Grid-Free. Discuss the chosen build with Buildings before marking it as the occupied workroom. Save each Chicago parcel decision for the phase it covers.
On a street or sidewalk
Chicago Department of Transportation's online permit portal lists DOT Dumpster for large rollaway dumpsters. It separately lists DOT Occupy the Public Right of Way for contractor obstructions. Ask CDOT which process fits an office, a cargo box or a vehicle stop. Show the street segment, curb side and pedestrian path. Include the period during which an obstruction would remain. The temporary-structure terms direct public-way structures toward a separate permit. Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection handles that public-way-use question. Send both offices the same site drawing.
Even a Chicago office positioned within the property line may involve a street stop. Ask CDOT about that temporary obstruction separately. If the unit would stand in an alley, identify who controls that space. Include existing bins, loading activity and construction materials in the sketch. In the Loop, an available parking stall can disappear during another crew's work. Show how pedestrians pass the proposed stop. A private owner can approve a pad inside the parcel. Ask the public-way authority about the street beyond it. If the public position changes, update the drawing before selecting the office footprint.
HOA and deed restrictions
A Chicago landlord may assign only part of a shared loading yard. Ask for the office's specific position in writing. Show any separate storage box beside it. A condominium association may regulate visible temporary structures. Share the proposed duration, exterior and entry orientation. Keep an easement clear where the deed reserves passage. A permit from Buildings addresses municipal review. A landlord's or association's permission addresses private use of that Chicago parcel. Bring both decisions to the superintendent. If another trade changes the shared Chicago entrance, review the private approval again.
For a Chicago residential renovation, ask the association about a driveway workroom before selecting one. An Alpine office has a matte-black exterior and cedar surrounds. Present that finish to the private architectural reviewer. Its covered entry deck needs space outside the office wall. Show that complete footprint on the lot plan. The association may set a date for clearing the driveway. Track that date against the building project. Ask about an extension if the renovation continues. An association decision cannot assign a Chicago street stall. Bring any curb question to CDOT instead.
Getting the site ready
The Rental Agreement's site-access terms specify a firm, level, well-drained pad. They call for marked utilities, safe access and a designated representative. For a 20 ft unit, they identify approximately 70 feet of straight clearance. For a 40 ft unit, they identify approximately 100 feet. Compare these lengths with a Chicago alley as it operates today. Check gates and overhead cables. Draw the approach around parked vehicles and material stacks. Mark where a person can reach the unit's door. Recheck that route when walls, paving or scaffolding change the site.
A Loop project may have room for tools but little room for meetings. A 10 ft storage container has a side man door and barred window. The 12 ft walk-in version offers another compact tool crib. For a wider approved compound, the 20 ft cargo unit brings four lock bars. The lockbox is welded to the 20 ft cargo build. Chicago teams considering a 40 ft high-cube should note its 9 ft 6 in height. Check both height and length against the Chicago access drawing. Keep the doors clear of snow piles and adjacent loading.
On a Chicago parcel with electrical service, ask the site electrician about Base's 50-amp inlet. On an unpowered construction phase, Grid-Free needs no shore connection. For either office, preserve the approved emergency route. Mark drainage away from the finished pad. Keep the owner informed when a changed work phase affects circulation. A new facade or sidewalk job can close the original entrance. Ask which alternate private path stays authorized. We can help compare the shorter office and storage positions against that revised plan. Keep the final layout useful throughout the active Chicago work.
Where JOLT fits best
A Chicago contractor with a long airport package may need both meetings and secure tools. The city's Concourse D announcement describes a 19-gate O'Hare facility. The June 2026 announcement says construction started less than a year earlier. Ask the contractor's airport authority for its assigned compound. Draw an office for the coordination team there. Mark a separate lockable storage position for materials. Base works when the compound has planned shore power. Grid-Free suits a phase before that power arrives. Airport gate and security instructions belong in the site's own access plan.
The IDOT I-290 drainage description concerns a different Chicago-area work pattern. It identifies improvements between the Des Plaines River and east of Austin Boulevard. Those improvements connect to Pump Station No. 4. IDOT lists the project in implementation. An assigned drainage crew could need a field office outside excavation space. Ask the package manager where its authorized laydown sits. Keep the box doors reachable as the work section shifts. A downtown storefront contractor might instead choose a single compact tool crib. We can discuss office and storage footprints on one approved Chicago layout.
Built for Chicago weather
NOAA's 1991–2020 O'Hare station normals give a July average high of 84.5 °F. The January average low is 18.8 °F. The station averages 37.86 inches of annual precipitation. It averages 38.4 inches of annual snowfall. O'Hare measurements provide context for a Chicago construction season. A lakefront work area can feel different from the airport. Plan drainage at the actual city pad. Identify where plowed snow will go. Keep the walking approach to the workroom open in January. Revisit alley access after freeze and thaw.
The Base office gives a powered Chicago pad mini-split heating and cooling. Its lights, outlets and vinyl-plank floor support a field workroom. Ask the electrician to plan its 50-amp shore-power connection. Grid-Free brings Chicago sites a WATCH camera, Starlink and solar. For unpowered phases, its 10 kWh battery runs the HVAC. Shore power is unnecessary. Solar output changes with sun and load. A Loop building can shade the chosen position. Discuss the office location and exposure together. For Chicago winter visits, consider Alpine. Its standing-seam over-roof is part of that build. Backup heat and a covered entry complete its winter features.
Chicago's summer rain matters to the pad as well as the crew. Put the office above persistent pooling where the approved layout permits. Ask who clears snow beside the cargo doors. Keep a protected walking approach to the office entrance. For Chicago projects needing more room, the 40 ft bathroom office brings a mini-split. Its far-end enclosure houses the bathroom. Discuss connections with site professionals before assigning its longer footprint. A compact Base position may better preserve a Loop loading lane. Use the climate plan and the permitted site drawing together. Neither should be an afterthought when construction phases move.
Who rents JOLT offices in Chicago
Airport construction teams
The O'Hare Concourse D announcement describes an active Chicago building program. Its planned facility has 19 gates. A package team can use an approved office for drawings and coordination. Ask the airport owner where that team may stage. A separate 20 ft lockable cargo box can hold project materials. Grid-Free may help before a compound's shore connection is ready. Mark the security-controlled entrance on the contractor's drawing. Keep the workroom outside other trades' assigned space.
Eisenhower drainage crews
IDOT's I-290 project description ties corridor drainage to Pump Station No. 4. A drainage package may need plans close to its assigned laydown. Put any Chicago-area field office beyond the active excavation. Ask the project manager about the next work section. A 12 ft walk-in box can serve tools on a tighter authorized pad. Base suits a powered construction position. Check that the crew can still reach the box after drainage staging changes.
Loop building rehabilitation contractors
Chicago's trailer instructions include permitted rehabilitation work. A Loop contractor can discuss an occupied site office with Buildings. Show the original work permit and the proposed office position. A short office may preserve a narrow private loading area. A 10 ft walk-in crib can give tool access where longer cargo storage cannot fit. Take any public curb stop to CDOT separately. Share the same drawing with the building owner. Keep a pedestrian route past the approved position.

Questions Chicago contractors ask
What comes in a JOLT office for a Chicago job?
Every 20 ft office has heat and A/C, lights, outlets, a vinyl-plank floor, a 36-inch steel door and two barred windows. Grid-Free adds roof solar, a 10 kWh battery, Starlink and a camera. Offices rent from $795 a month.
Can the office run before the site has power?
Yes. Grid-Free runs its heat and A/C, lights, outlets and Starlink from roof solar and a 10 kWh battery. Output depends on sun and load. It rents for $1,495 a month.
Can we put our logo on it?
Yes. BRAND applies your logo in 24 by 48 inch vinyl on two sides of the unit. $450, one time.
Do I need a permit for a jobsite office in Chicago?
Possibly; ask Chicago's Department of Buildings to classify your occupied container office. Its construction-trailer instructions concern single-level temporary office or storage trailers and require an underlying building-work permit first. Describe your construction work, office occupancy and power connection. Ask planning how temporary-use zoning section 17-9-0301 applies to the exact parcel.
Can the office sit on a Chicago street?
Only if Chicago approves that specific public-way use. Ask the Department of Transportation about contractor obstruction authorization and Business Affairs and Consumer Protection about a standing structure in the public way. Show both desks the curb side, pedestrian space and duration. Explain whether the office remains there or a vehicle merely stops nearby.
What does the site need before delivery?
A firm, level pad, a clear path for the truck, and a person on site to show the driver where it goes. Tell us about gates, slopes and overhead lines when you ask for the quote.
