Aterio's March 2026 count lists 23 Indiana data centers under construction, 69 announced and 28 operating. Work is concentrated around New Carlisle, Fort Wayne, LaPorte and the LEAP district at Lebanon. JOLT's The Grid serves these campuses with a badge-ready 40 ft container site office.
Indiana is the surprise of the 2026 map. Industrial electricity at 8 to 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, permit-to-completion timelines of 14 to 20 months, a data center sales-tax exemption that runs for decades, and land in 1,000-acre parcels along the interstates have pulled Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta into a state where the nearest data center used to be Chicago. A fast build means a short term and more moves, and a Midwest winter means an office that runs on a generator at 10 below in week one. Both are what the Grid is for.
Where are data centers being built in Indiana right now?
New Carlisle and St. Joseph County. Amazon's campus at New Carlisle, west of South Bend along the Indiana Toll Road, is the largest single data center program in the state and one of the largest in the country, a multi-building AI campus on former farmland with its own substation program and years of construction ahead of it.
Fort Wayne and Allen County. Google's multi-billion-dollar campus in Fort Wayne is the northeast anchor, built around the county's industrial rates and Interstate 69 fiber.
LaPorte and the lakeshore. Microsoft's campus at LaPorte, between Michigan City and the Toll Road, is the state's first hyperscale build on the lake, with further central Indiana investment announced.
Lebanon and the LEAP district. The Limitless Exploration/Advanced Pace innovation district in Boone County, northwest of Indianapolis on Interstate 65, was master-planned for exactly this: Meta's campus and Eli Lilly's manufacturing share the district, and more data center parcels are in permitting.
The Indianapolis ring. Hancock County east of the city along Interstate 70, and Hendricks and Marion counties west and south, carry campus-scale proposals and the colocation builds that follow the hyperscalers.
Buildermuse reported in April 2026 that Microsoft's central Indiana program would deliver over 400 megawatts and hire 2,000 construction workers at peak, with training partnerships with the building trades. Phases and names change quarterly; JOLT checks each project against a county filing or local reporting at every refresh of this page.
Which hyperscalers, developers and general contractors are active in Indiana?
Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta at campus scale; the colocation operators and developers following them into the Indianapolis ring.
The general contractors with data center groups working in Indiana include Turner, Holder, Mortenson, Clayco, JE Dunn and Whiting-Turner, and the Indiana builders that grew up on the state's industrial work: Pepper Construction, Shiel Sexton, F.A. Wilhelm and Walsh. A 14-to-20-month Indiana schedule means the GC mobilizes hard in the first 60 days, and the electrical contractor, the largest trade on any data center build, is on site with its own office before the GC's temporary service is energized, running on a generator in a January that can reach 20 below. Command's generator inlet and cold-climate heat pumps fit that crew.
What does an Indiana data center site office need?
Cold, snow, wet ground and wind.
Cold. Indiana winters can fall below zero. The Grid carries two 12,000 BTU cold-climate mini-split heat pumps, heating to minus 13 F, behind R-19 closed-cell foam walls and an R-30 roof.
Snow. Snowfall varies sharply between central Indiana and the lake-effect belt. Keep the doors and service access clear, and coordinate winter maintenance in the site logistics plan.
Wet ground and frost. Indiana clay holds water in spring and heaves in winter. The Grid sits on cribbing on a prepared pad, and the delivery approach must support the truck or crane specified in the site plan.
Wind. Indiana sees severe spring storms. Every Grid provides four corner-casting anchor points, with the final anchoring method selected for the pad and local requirements.
How does The Grid get to an Indiana site?
DC Deploy covers freight, tilt-bed placement or crane set, leveling on cribbing, four-point anchoring, an electrical rough-in walkthrough with the site electrician and end-of-term pickup anywhere in the lower 48; see nationwide delivery.
On delivery day, the DC Deploy crew levels and anchors the unit and walks the shore inlet with your electrician; Command arrives with WATCH and CONNECT built in.
What does a Grid cost on an Indiana data center site?
Indiana uses the published rents, deposits and add-ons on the data center pricing page. DC Deploy is quoted per campus.
What is the power picture in Indiana and when does temp power land?
Four utilities carry the state's data center load. Indiana Michigan Power, the AEP subsidiary, serves Fort Wayne and the South Bend area. NIPSCO serves LaPorte and the lakeshore. AES Indiana serves Indianapolis, and Duke Energy Indiana serves much of central and southern Indiana around it. All four have large-load pipelines measured in hundreds of megawatts and have moved to tariffs and interconnection programs that ask data centers to commit to capacity; the state's industrial rates, 8 to 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, are the reason the pipeline exists.
Temporary construction service on a greenfield campus can trail first mobilization. Grid Command's 50 A generator inlet with a mechanical interlock lets a generator power the office until the electrician brings a 60 A circuit to the pad; JOLT's 25 kW generator add-on is $1,850/mo plus fuel.
Do you need a permit for a temporary site office in Indiana?
In most Indiana jurisdictions a temporary construction office is an accessory to the project's building permit and is shown on the site logistics plan under the Indiana Building Code's treatment of temporary structures. St. Joseph, LaPorte, Allen and Boone counties fold the office into the project permit with an anchoring detail on file. The City of Indianapolis and Marion County issue a temporary-structure permit with a fee and an anchoring detail. Hancock and Hendricks counties follow the county building departments' practice.
Confirm the requirement with the authority having jurisdiction named on the building permit. Four-point anchoring is part of every DC Deploy; bring the AHJ's anchoring request to the data center specialist before the delivery window.
How long is an Indiana site office term?
An Indiana building runs 14 to 20 months from permit to energized, so a single-building placement is a 12-to-18-month term. The Grid has a 12-month minimum, and a campus program can move an office between phases with the on-campus relocation.
For a contractor running several buildings, the buy page shows the purchase and 36-month lease-to-own choices. For one building, rent may fit the project term.
How do multi-building Indiana campuses use a Grid Campus?
A New Carlisle campus may build several buildings at a time, and the GC's project office, owner's rep, trade contractors and security office move as buildings turn over. A Grid Campus is 2 to 12 Grids in a row or stacked two-high. A Stack Kit rents at $395/mo with $1,500 setup per stacked pair.
An order of 6 or more Commands earns a 5 percent rent credit each month for the first 12 months. The credit applies only to qualifying Command orders.
Which Indiana counties and metros does JOLT serve?
All of them. The counties carrying data center construction today: St. Joseph, which is New Carlisle and South Bend; LaPorte; Allen, which is Fort Wayne; Boone, which is Lebanon and the LEAP district; Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Hamilton and Johnson around Indianapolis; Porter and Lake on the lakeshore toward Chicago. Other Indiana counties can be quoted too; DC Deploy is quoted per campus in one business day and its 6–8 weeks window still applies.
Nearby markets with their own JOLT pages include Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa.
Read the Indiana utility assignment before planning temporary service
Utility names are not interchangeable across an Indiana campus search. The project address determines the serving utility, while the office pad determines where temporary distribution must reach. Procurement should obtain the exact service address and the utility contact from the civil or electrical package instead of selecting a provider from the nearest city name.
Large-load commercial terms can also differ from ordinary economic-development assumptions. An Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission order approved Indiana Michigan Power tariff language excluding customers primarily operating as data centers from its Economic Development Rider 2. That detail concerns the permanent customer's rate treatment, but it illustrates why the project team should not use a general industrial incentive as evidence for the campus service plan.
For the site office, ask the electrical contractor for two dates. The first is when a reviewed temporary source can reach the office pad. The second is when that source is expected to be replaced or moved as site distribution advances.
Record whether Core will receive its 60 A shore connection at placement or whether Command will begin through its 50 A generator inlet. Have the electrician confirm the source, conductors and load plan. If the office later moves from a substation work area to a building compound, repeat that review for the new connection.
Keep permanent data center service separate from the temporary office in the mobilization schedule. A campus energization milestone does not establish that the office-pad circuit is ready.
Build a county-specific office approval packet
Indiana projects should identify the authority having jurisdiction from the issued construction documents. Do not assume that a county name alone answers the question. A site may involve a city building department, county planning office, fire official or another reviewer named by the project permit.
Send the reviewer a simple, consistent description: a 40 ft by 8 ft high-cube container used as a temporary construction office. Include the proposed location on the logistics plan, both personnel doors, the delivery method, the prepared bearing area and the four anchoring points included with DC Deploy.
Ask whether the office is covered by the main project permit or requires a separate temporary-structure filing. Ask what inspection applies before occupancy. Confirm whether the reviewer needs an anchoring detail, accessibility route, electrical permit, address assignment or fire-lane separation shown on the plan.
Route each answer to its actual owner. The civil team owns grading and the bearing area. Site logistics controls delivery access and placement. The electrical contractor owns the customer-side source and connection. The access vendor owns reader integration on Command.
Keep written approval with the delivery packet. If the office moves to another building phase, check whether the accepted plan and inspection remain valid at the new position. A campus move is not merely a billing decision when the approved location changes.
Plan an Indiana winter placement without guessing at the weather
Winter readiness begins below the office. The project should inspect the prepared bearing surface after heavy rain, a freeze or snow removal changes its condition. Water should not be directed toward the doors, electrical connection or planned access path.
Keep the two means of egress usable in the snow plan. Mark the doors and exterior electrical equipment so plow operators can see what must remain clear. Decide who removes snow around the office rather than assuming the general site route includes the personnel entrances.
The insulated envelope uses R-19 closed-cell foam at the walls and R-30 at the roof. Two cold-climate mini-split heat pumps are included. Those product facts do not replace the electrician's load review or the project's weather plan.
If Command starts on a generator, name the party responsible for the unit, fuel and daily site controls. The optional JOLT generator is 25 kW. Fuel is billed separately under the generator add-on. The electrician should confirm the office connection and load plan before use.
Revisit placement when spring thaw changes the surrounding work. Inspect drainage, access and cribbing as part of the project's normal site checks. Escalate any project-specific anchoring or bearing requirement before a planned relocation.
Compare Indiana office quotes on written scope
Normalize every proposal to the same build, term and site condition. Record the office dimensions, workstation count, electrical inlets, network infrastructure, delivery scope, anchoring, pickup and any planned move as separate decision lines.
For a Core comparison, look for the 40 ft high-cube chassis, four workstations, rack and Cat6A infrastructure. For Command, include badge-ready door hardware, WATCH, CONNECT, the generator inlet, six workstations and the conference package.
Do not combine one-time placement work with recurring rent when reviewing alternatives. Under DC Deploy, the two placement choices are a tilt-bed set and a crane set. The package covers freight. It also covers leveling on cribbing and anchoring at four points. The included scope concludes with an electrical rough-in walkthrough and pickup at term end. A competing quote should state whether each corresponding task is included.
Use the actual Indiana site ZIP and planned pad condition in the request. Note whether a crane set is expected, whether the route crosses active construction traffic and whether the delivery contact controls gate access.
Finally, identify what the project supplies. Typical scope questions include the bearing area, customer electrical work, site fiber, network equipment and badge-reader integration. A written boundary gives the superintendent a more useful comparison than a monthly rate viewed alone.
How do I reserve a Grid for an Indiana project?
Choose Core or Command and submit the site ZIP, quantity, target date and project details through the data center reservation path; the confirmation carries the delivery window and a specialist responds within 15 minutes during business hours.
How many data centers are under construction in Indiana?
Aterio's March 2026 count lists 23 under construction, 69 announced and 28 operating.
Does JOLT deliver site offices anywhere in Indiana?

Is The Grid built for Indiana winters?
The Grid carries two cold-climate heat pumps rated to heat at minus 13 F, R-19 closed-cell foam walls and an R-30 roof. The site remains responsible for a prepared pad and winter access.
Who is the utility and how does that affect the office?
Indiana Michigan Power, NIPSCO, AES Indiana and Duke Energy Indiana serve different project areas. If temporary power trails mobilization, Command's generator inlet can serve the office until the site electrician brings power to the pad.
Where is Amazon's New Carlisle campus and can JOLT deliver there?
The campus is in St. Joseph County west of South Bend along the Indiana Toll Road. It is within the same lower-48 DC Deploy coverage as every other Indiana site.
How does the Grid handle an Indiana winter on a generator?
Command has a 50 A generator inlet with a mechanical interlock, and JOLT offers a 25 kW generator add-on. The site electrician must confirm the connection and load plan.
